Most people will be
happy when they hear the words “receding waters”,

In order to prepare
you for coming to terms with the state of your
house after the floods, let’s take a look at the fictitious house of
Mr. Consciousness, to see what he’s going to face when the waters have
receded.

Before coming home,
check the news and make sure of the situation
before you return, otherwise you could end up moving everything out
again. Don’t enter the house alone, as if there was an emergency you’d
need someone to help you.

Make sure you’ve got
all the things you’ll need to straighten up your
house, such as a broom, bin bags, mop, brush, old rags, bucket and
cleaning fluid. And don’t forget equipment for checking electrical
leakages and a torch too.

Most importantly,
make sure you’re well covered by your clothing, and
are wearing a face mask, rubber gloves and rubber boots before going
into your house. By doing this, you can protect yourself against
electric shocks as well as germs. But make sure there are no holes in
your gears.

Cut off the electric system to check whether or not
you can use it. Carefully check your sockets, switches and all electric
cables that have been flooded to ensure that there’s no electricity
leaking. Or if you can change them just do it! And don’t under any
circumstances use any electrical equipment that’s been flooded until
it’s been check over by an expert. Take care of moisture or rust on the
slots of your sockets and in electrical equipment too, as it can get
very hot if you use it. If it gets really hot, the electrical wire
insulation could break and start a fire. So, Sarah, make sure you’ve
checked over the entire system thoroughly before you turn it on”

Brace yourself for
the fact that your house is going to be damp, smell
musty, and be full of mould and rubbish from the floodwater. If water
has been flowing rapidly through your house then your possessions may
be damaged. But don’t despair. Other people will be in the same boat as
you, and the most important thing is to use your consciousness and
remember that you can gradually get to grips with things.

First, you’ll need to
ventilate your house. Let the air flow through
your house for a bit before you go into it. As you’re inspecting the
damage, don’t forget to take photos as evidence so you can make an
insurance claim.

mountain of it.

The problem of
rubbish isn’t just one for your individual family, but
one for the whole community. Say the rubbish brought by the floodwater
has blocked the drain in front of your house. If every household simply
hosed the rubbish down the drain in front of their house, it could end
up blocking the main drain, and then no water could drain away at all.
But if you pulled the rubbish out, and dealt with it in a proper
manner, the drain would be able to function normally. As for the normal
rubbish around the house, what you can do is to separate it.

So when you’re
cleaning mould, take the following precautions: Using a
high pressure hose will just make the mould disperse even more. It’s
better to pour on the water, wipe it and polish it. For the initial
cleaning, just use liquid soap or dissolved washing powder, but if
there’s a lot of mould give it another go with alcohol or diluted
bleach. Whatever you do, make sure everything’s dry before you put your
possessions back in place.
